1. Confirm who is in. Ask, do not assume. Nobody should feel obliged, and an uneven list ruins the draw.
2. Agree the limit and the date in the same message, along with where gifts will be opened.
3. Draw names. Paper slips in a bowl works fine in person. For remote groups, use an online generator so nobody sees the full list.
4. Collect one hint each. A single line, such as a favourite drink, a hobby or something they would never buy themselves, transforms the quality of the gifts.
5. Set a buying deadline a few days before the event so shipping delays do not leave someone empty handed.
