How the shopping day count works

On this site, a shopping day means Monday to Saturday, up to and including December 24, counted in the timezone your device reports. It is a planning count we chose so the number stays realistic. It is not a guarantee that a particular shop, postal service or retailer is open, and Sundays are excluded by the rule rather than because of any claim about trading hours where you live.

If you prefer a broader planning view, the weeks until Christmas page also shows how many weekends and pay cycles remain, which is often the more useful figure when a budget is involved.

Turn the number into a shopping plan

The mistake most of us make is shopping by person, one name at a time, which turns a short list into six separate trips. Shopping by category is faster and cheaper because you compare similar items side by side and you only queue once. Here is a four trip plan that fits comfortably into a normal December.

What to buy at each stage of the countdown

20 or more shopping days left

Anything custom. Engraving, embroidery, photo books, framed prints, made to order jewellery and anything shipping from another country. Anything with a production or delivery lead time belongs here, while there is still room for a problem to be fixed before Christmas.

10 to 19 shopping days left

The comfortable window for the bulk of the list: there is still time for a delivery to arrive and for a return to be sent back, as long as you check the deadline shown at checkout. Use it for the people you find hardest, with help from our guides for mom, teens and people who say they want nothing.

4 to 9 shopping days left

Move to click and collect and to shops you can reach on foot. This is also the point to switch from objects to experiences, because a booking, a subscription or a voucher arrives in seconds and still feels considered when it is chosen with the person in mind.

1 to 3 shopping days left

Buy locally, wrap immediately, and stop adding names to the list. Delis, bookshops, garden centres and florists are worth a look at this point because a single good present from a small shop beats another rushed compromise. Our last minute Christmas gifts guide is written for this exact moment.

How to shop fewer days without spending more

Fewer trips usually means more impulse buying, unless you go in with three things written down: a name list, a rough amount per person, and one gift idea per name that you already know would land. That last column is the one people skip, and it is the reason a quick trip turns into an expensive one.

Set the total first and work back from it rather than adding up as you go. If the number is tight this year, our Christmas on a budget page has the practical version of that conversation, including how to agree a lower limit with family without it feeling awkward.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a shopping day on this site?
On this site a shopping day means Monday to Saturday, up to and including December 24, in your local timezone. It is our planning convention, not a statement about any particular store, postal service or retailer being open.
Why are Sundays left out of the count?
Leaving Sundays out gives a deliberately conservative planning number, so any Sunday shopping time you do have becomes a bonus rather than something the count already spent. Whether shops near you open on Sunday is a local question we cannot answer for you.
Is December 24 included?
Yes, December 24 is included by our counting rule unless it falls on a Sunday. That is the rule of the count, not an assumption that shops are open all day on Christmas Eve. Check the opening hours of the specific shops you plan to visit.
When is the last day to order online?
There is no single date. Cutoffs differ by product, destination, carrier and service level, and personalised or made to order items usually close earliest. Check the delivery deadline shown at that retailer's checkout or on the carrier's own festive deadlines page, and treat it as the only reliable answer.
How many shopping days do most people actually need?
If your list has fewer than ten names, two focused trips plus one online order is usually enough. Longer lists are easier when you split them by category rather than by person, so one trip covers stocking fillers, another covers the bigger gifts, and food shopping stays separate.
Does the count roll over after Christmas Eve?
Yes. Once December 24 has passed, the count switches to the next Christmas and the target year is shown next to the number, so a figure seen between December 26 and 31 is never a broken current-year count.
