How we count sleeps

Every crossing of local midnight counts as one sleep, so the number above drops by one the moment your device clock reaches a new day. It is read from your own timezone rather than a server clock, which means a family in Sydney and a family in Chicago see the count that matches their own bedtime.

On December 24 the page shows one sleep, because there is exactly one night of sleep left before Christmas morning. On December 25 it shows zero. If you would rather see the exact hours and minutes, the main Christmas countdown runs to the second, and the Christmas Eve countdown targets December 24 instead.

Why children understand sleeps better than days

Young children have a shaky grip on calendar dates but a very firm grip on bedtime. Telling a five year old that Christmas is in nine days means little. Telling them there are nine more bedtimes gives them a unit they already live by, and it makes the countdown something they can act on tonight rather than something abstract in the future.

It also helps with the hardest part of December, which is the waiting. When the number is visible and moves once a day, children stop asking every hour. Many parents find that pointing at the number is enough to end the question, especially if the child gets to be the one who updates a paper chain or crosses off a square.

Ways to fill the sleeps that are left

Use the number above as a planning tool, not just a decoration. Each of these ideas fits a different point in the countdown, so pick the one that matches how many sleeps you have.

What the sleeps count means for your own to do list

More than 21 sleeps

Plenty of room. Book travel, agree who is hosting, and order anything personalised or made to measure. Photo gifts, engraved items and print orders all need this much lead time. Our Christmas checklist sets out the same window week by week.

8 to 20 sleeps

The practical middle. Standard delivery is still safe, cards can still reach other countries, and there is time to fix a gift that arrives wrong. This is the best moment to finish the list for harder people, which is why we wrote guides for dad and grandparents.

1 to 7 sleeps

Shift to things you can collect in person or send instantly. Local shops, click and collect, experience bookings and a well written card all still work. The last minute gift guide is built for exactly this stretch, and the shopping days counter shows how many trading days that really leaves.

The last sleep, and how to survive it

The night before Christmas is the one night children genuinely struggle to sleep. A predictable evening helps more than an exciting one. Keep dinner at the usual time, run the normal bath and story routine, and leave one small job for them to do just before bed, such as putting out something for Santa or the reindeer. Having a task to finish gives the evening an ending.

It also helps to agree a morning rule out loud before lights out. Many families set a time before which nobody comes downstairs, and put a stocking at the end of the bed so there is something to open in the meantime. If you want more ideas for the evening itself, our Christmas Eve traditions page collects the ones that travel well between families.

Frequently asked questions

What does sleeps until Christmas mean?
Sleeps is the number of nights you still go to sleep before Christmas morning. It is a friendly way of counting the days that children often understand best.
How is sleeps different from days?
Sleeps counts nights of sleep until Christmas morning. The day count can include the rest of today, which is why the two numbers can differ by one.
Does it work after midnight?
Yes. As soon as the local clock crosses midnight, the sleep count goes down by one.
How many sleeps are there until Christmas Eve?
One fewer than the count to Christmas morning. If the page shows five sleeps until Christmas Day, there are four sleeps until Christmas Eve.
What is a good way to show the sleeps count to a child?
Give the number a shape they can see. A paper chain with one loop per sleep, a jar with one chocolate per night, or a wall chart where they colour in a star each morning all turn an abstract number into something they can touch.
Why does the number sometimes look different from another countdown?
Most countdowns measure the hours left until midnight on December 25. The sleeps count measures nights instead, so during the day the two numbers can differ by one. Both are correct, they just answer slightly different questions.
Do sleeps include naps?
No. Only the overnight sleeps count, so an afternoon nap will not move the number. Children ask this more often than you might expect.
